What can be more thrilling to the human mind than a compelling courtroom drama? If executed well, the audience finds themselves at the edge of their seats, biting their nails while trying to solve the mystery with every piece of information unfolding on the screen.
Today, I have compiled a list of five courtroom dramas responsible for giving this genre the cult status it enjoys today. Take a look at the list, and if, by chance, you haven’t had the opportunity to watch any of these, you need to stop everything you are doing right away and witness the thrilling journey they offer.
Trial of the Chicago 7
Based on a real-life event in 1969 America, where seven men stand on trial facing several charges surrounding the uprising at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ is not just a courtroom drama for the ages but also a testament to Aaron Sorkin’s brilliant writing.
Court
Court is a 2014 Marathi film that revolves around a social activist cum folk singer. He has to appear before the court after being arrested on charges of inciting a manhole worker to commit suicide through his politically and socially charged folk song.
One of the most talked-about movies in Indian cinema, ‘Court’ features characters from diverse backgrounds speaking different languages, highlighting the rich tapestry of cultures in India. The film offers a socially relevant and true-to-life depiction of Indian courtrooms and society in general.
Anatomy of a Fall
This French film has received numerous nominations and awards for its intriguing plotline and compelling storytelling. The story revolves around a woman who is the prime suspect in her husband’s murder. While she stands trial, her blind son faces a moral dilemma as the sole witness.
The movie is a thrilling ride, convincing you with every argument, whether in favor or against the defendant, and it will keep you guessing until the very end.
Witness for the Prosecution
Adapted from Agatha Christie’s play, this 1957 film is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after courtroom dramas of all time. The story centers on a man accused of murdering a wealthy woman. A renowned attorney, believing in his innocence, takes up his case. Despite knowing that proving innocence in court won’t be easy, as the only alibi the man has is, his beloved wife.
To add to his shock, the wife also testifies against her husband, claiming he privately confessed to the crime.
The movie is filled with unexpected twists and offers a suspenseful experience to its viewers.
12 Angry Men
Every list of courtroom dramas ends with this masterpiece. Shot in a room with only 12 characters, ’12 Angry Men’ is not only a movie, but a lesson in filmmaking. The story revolves around 12 jurors assembled in a room to discuss the verdict of a man accused of committing murder. With only one juror against, and 11 in favor of sending the accused behind bars, the verdict comes to a deadlock situation.
The movie offers compelling perspectives on society and the judicial system of America at the time.
These are some of my picks for the best courtroom dramas of all time across around the world. Whether you are a beginner or a connoisseur of films, this one list holds true for all.
